How to Create Spring Fashion with Winter Pieces

Mar 26, 2024 | STYLE

It’s that time. Time to transition your closet from winter to spring fashion. Let’s dive into five ways you can revamp your winter wardrobe into a clever springtime refresh.

1. Layers Don’t ditch those cozy sweaters yet. Layer a lightweight tank top or t-shirt under a chunky knit sweater. Tie the sweater around your waist as the day warms up. You can also layer a light cardigan over a flowy maxi dress for a chic and practical look.

2. Colors – Swap out dark winter colors for lighter hues. Pair a black turtleneck with white jeans for a fresh take. Consider pastel colors like lavender, baby blue, or mint green. Fresh colors add the perfect spring feel.

3. Bottoms – Pack away those heavy leggings. Replace them with ankle-length jeans or breezy midi skirts. Word on the street is fishnets are a spring 2024 trend. (You go first.)

4. Shoes – Ditch the boots and booties. Spring calls for lighter footwear. Sneakers, sandals, or flats are perfect for warmer weather. Elevate your look with a pair of metallic flats or mules.

5. Accessories – Accessories can completely transform an outfit. Swap winter scarves for statement necklaces. Add a pop of color with a bright bag or a pair of fun earrings (see below).

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try pairing unexpected pieces together. Roll up the sleeves of a long-sleeved shirt. Tie a button-down at the waist or knot a light sweater over your shoulders. Transitioning your favorite winter pieces into spring looks is all about creativity.

This season, fashion is all about playful expression. If you plan to buy anything new, start with these key pieces:

1. Polo and Rugby Shirts are the epitome of spring casual this year. Grab unexpected colors with a relaxed fit. Pair them with tailored trousers or camo cargo pants for a playful juxtaposition.

2. High-Waisted Bottoms are the most flattering lower-half silhouette. Tuck in a flowy blouse for a relaxed vibe. And don’t forget high-waisted skirts. They’re a great option for creating an elongated look.

3. Cardigans are big this spring — as in oversized. They offer a cozy yet stylish layering option. Cardigans are perfect for topping t-shirts and jeans and dresses.

4. Metallics and Sequins are adding a touch of glamour to everyday looks this spring. Think metallic jackets, bags, belts, and shoes.

5. Sheer Fabrics like chiffon blouses and peek-a-boo dresses are a fun layering strategy. Pair a sheer top with a cami or bralette for a playful evening out.

You know I couldn’t complete a post without focussing on sustainability. Here are some fantastic places to find sustainable spring fashion:

Vintage and Consignment Shops offer a treasure trove of unique finds. A well-made vintage dress or jacket can become a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.

ThredUp, Poshmark, and The RealReal offer curated secondhand collections.

Etsy offers sustainable and pre-loved designer pieces. It’s my all-time favorite resource for unique fashion.

Everlane offers high-quality wardrobe essentials made from sustainable materials. They focus on ethical production and use transparent manufacturing practices.

Local Boutiques often carry unique pieces from smaller, sustainable designers. You might discover your new favorite brand while supporting your local community. My favorite in Orange County is Haus of Trade in San Clemente.

Try to steer clear of fast fashion. Invest in well-made pieces that will last for years to come. Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Fairtrade International. This ensures the brand meets sustainability standards.
