Our lifestyles have shifted since March 2020. We’re giving the design of our homes more thought than ever. Creating a happy place where we can retreat has assumed priority status.

Designing your space requires creativity, planning and a heap of patience. When I styled homes, I’d begin each project by asking my client which piece in the space was their favorite. Then, I’d work toward designing the space around that one special thing. Next, I’d map the scale of each stick of furniture to ensure the heights and sizes were balanced. Finally, I’d create layers of pattern and texture with pillows, rugs, interesting objects, fresh greenery and at least one heirloom. I like to think of the heirloom as the story-telling cherry on top.

Ultimately, our home is meant to be an escape hatch from the world’s frenetic fray. We all deserve a calming space where we can dial down and get away. I hope these helpful articles help you do just that.  —xo
